Afrocentric photography studio,
rooted in public history
A man without culture is like
a zebra without stripes
PROVERB
INTRODUCTION
Mabuza is the meeting of art and history, a studio that tells stories of who we are, who we were, where we come from and why we are here. The past is fundamental in our understanding of the present, it informs our collective and individual memories.
Mabuza uses storytelling to reimagine a better future by humanising identities that have undergone subjugation. Specialising in representation, Mabuza explores identity, culture and dress in hopes of promoting healthy self-images of Black identities.

ABOUT
Mabuza is created by Nompumelelo Ncube (Nom) and is named after her family totem meaning
'The Ones Who Ask.'
'The intersectionalities within my identity have taught me the importance in continuing to diversify the lenses through which we see Black identities and communities. My mission is to build bridges across the diaspora for us to exchange ideas on heritage, culture and Blackness.
I want to tell stories in an Afrocentric way that does not shy away from the complexities of history and the nuances of my position as a Zimbabwean born British raised artist and academic. You can view our methodology here.'
